Best recoil control

I'm putting together a rifle for hitting the range, and I can’t help but wonder about the best options for keeping the recoil under control in our neck of the woods. Do you think compensators and brakes handle the humid air differently? And what about the local ammo brands? Just curious if that makes a difference.

I think compensators and brakes handle their job just fine, no matter how humid it gets out there. They're really all about managing that gas pressure, and it happens so quickly and with such force that the moisture in the air doesn’t even get a chance to mess things up. I've shot in some pretty muggy conditions and I’ve never felt like they performed any differently. It’s just not a factor that seems to matter at all.

If you know of someone who can do a custom fit stock with a recoil-absorbing stock butt pad that works, too. I have a 7Rem Mag, and a while ago I had it fit to me with an aftermarket pad, which worked wonders.

Whether you're choosing a small local brand or a large manufacturer, you want to ensure that the powder charges and bullet weights are reliable. This consistency will have a much bigger impact on how you manage recoil than the brand's origin.
