I had to switch to a different powder halfway through a load project and work the whole process back up carefully. The replacement powder shot fine but the rifle clearly preferred the original once distances stretched out. It was not worse, just different..sometimes supply shortages accidentally teach you something useful. Anyone else discover a better load by accident?

That’s how half my best loads happened, forced changes sometimes reveal what the rifle actually likes.

With all due respect and humility. If that happens, then you failed to plan for the project you were undertaking. I understand where you’re coming from though.

A lot depends on each individuals target of velocity and accuracy. What powders accomplish it in that particular cartridge etc etc list goes on!

If you’re consistently getting better loads thru forced action. Then you need to examine your loading regimen, technique, equipment etc.

I understand if you don’t have a mentor/teacher etc and doing things completely on your own. But these days info is literally at your fingertips per se. It’s really crazy the amount of stuff you can find online these days. But of course due diligence as everything online isn’t right either.

Back in the day it was reading or calling people to talk to them about things 😂

Being In Hawai’i has its disadvantages when it comes to reloading. Especially powder/primer availability and cost. Which is ridiculous l hate it’s such an issue to ship powder/primer here!!

Wish you all the best with your load work up!

Good perspective honestly, load development gets a lot smoother once process consistency becomes more important than chasing velocity.

When the shortage hit, I had to swap out my usual H4350 for RL16. And that change was a blessing in disguise. My 6.5 Creedmoor actually started shooting even better in the cold and I saw a noticeable improvement in how tight the velocity spread was. Funny how sometimes you learn more when you're forced to try something new than when everything's going perfectly.

And that’s exactly why I always try multiple powders, primers etc in my rifles.

Reloder 15.5 is a good one to try also as is N555

And the worst part? When you finally stumble onto something that actually works, it suddenly disappears from the shelves. Poof. Gone!
