Been mulling over building my own AR-15 for a bit now and finally started diving into parts. Honestly, it’s a bit overwhelming! There seem to be some decent deals if you know where to scout them out, but I’m still figuring out what’s actually good and what’s just hype.

I’m leaning towards a basic rifle setup for my first go. Probably sticking with the classic 5.56 since it seems like a solid choice, but I’m open to other suggestions if anyone thinks a different route would be better.

I’d love to hear if there are any brands you folks would avoid. I’ve read a few horror stories about some shady parts out there. What about any hidden costs I should keep in mind? Or common rookie mistakes? Sometimes I wonder if it might just be easier to grab a pre-built one instead of going through all the hassle.

Would really appreciate any advice, or even just anecdotes from when you were starting out. Thanks!

When you're building your setup, definitely start with a good quality lower receiver, like the ones from Aero Precision. You want something reliable here. Avoid those no name brands or the ones with flashy logos that might look cool but don't hold up in terms of tolerances.
