The economics of reloading only make sense if you actually track the numbers

I tracked everything for six months. Equipment amortized, consumables, and my time at a reasonable hourly rate. The savings were real on rifle calibers, modest on handgun calibers and I was lying to myself on the time side. But I kept doing it because I enjoy the process and the connection to my ammunition...that matters too.

I once tracked every expense and right after that, I stopped tracking my time altogether. Some hobbies just don’t survive spreadsheets and this is definitely one of them.

Numbers don’t lie, reloading saves some money, eats time but the satisfaction keeps you coming back anyway.

I tell people reloading ammo saves money but honestly, that’s a stretch. It’s like saying owning a boat saves you money on fishing charters. The real payoff is knowing exactly what’s in your brass and enjoying the ritual of it. Don’t get too caught up in the math.
