What shotgun works best for home defense?

I'm in the market for a shotgun for home defense and would love some feedback. I'm debating between a 12-gauge and a 20-gauge. I know the 12 has a lot of stopping power, but I've heard the 20 is easier to handle and has less recoil, especially in tight spaces.

What should I focus on for barrel length and stock setup? Any specifics that really come in handy for defense situations?

Also, do you have recommendations for brands or models? I want something reliable without too many bells and whistles.

Lastly, how crucial is training? I’ve shot shotguns a bit, but never really trained. What kind of practice should I look into so I feel ready in case I need to use it?

At 72 I'm sticking with my tried and true Stevens model 311 side by side 12 gauge. Had it since I was 14. Bought a box of 00 buckshot just for self defense. Being hit at close range, I understand, is equivalent to being hit by 8 rounds of 9mm, and my 311 holds 2 rounds of course. If I didn't own that, I'd look at a decent pump action 20 gauge I think. Loaded with 00 buckshot it should be just fine. Though I don't think I'd be undergunned with 2 rounds of 12 gauge.

I’d have to go with the Mossberg 590 Shockwave. It’s compact and super reliable, which makes it perfect for close-quarters situations. With that 14" barrel and the bird’s head grip, you can really maneuver it easily in tight spots. And don’t let its size fool you since it still delivers the firepower of a 12 gauge.
